What Our Philadelphia Clients Say

Dr. Santore and Tara were excellent with Atlas my eighty pound Rottweiler. Both were calm and professional and thorough in their assessment. Having them both come to our home decreased Atlas’ anxiety and led to a better experience for him.

My dog has been treated by BetterVet twice now--once by Dr. Coughlin, once by Dr. Santore. Both appointments were fantastic experiences with kind, compassionate, accommodating, and extremely knowledgeable veterinarians. The doctors are wonderful, the nurses are wonderful--BetterVet is wonderful! :)

Had a wonderful, caring experience with two wonderful vets yesterday. I have a senior cat being evaluated for wellness, and they were so thoughtful and reassuring the entire time. I so deeply appreciated their sensitivity towards my anxious little old man. I won’t go back to a traditional vet after this if I can keep seeing Dr. Julia. :)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Philadelphia a dog-friendly city?
Philadelphia is a dog-lover’s paradise with tons of dog-friendly restaurants, dog-friendly hotels, and lots of activities for you and your pooch. The city also offers a number of dog parks, such as the Schuylkill River Park Dog Run, which has a synthetic grass courtyard on the river for pet owners tired of muddy paws. Given that Philadelphia is an extremely walkable city, you can bring your pooch to various spots in the city such as the Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, and bike along Pennypack Trail.
Do you need a dog license in Philly?

The City of Philadelphia requires that dogs four months old or older must be vaccinated for rabies and licensed. You have 30 days from when you get a dog, or from when you move to Philadelphia with your dog, to get a dog license from the Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT) of Philadelphia. License fees cost $40 for unaltered dogs, while dogs that have been spayed/neutered can apply for a dog license at a discounted rate of $16 (you must show a spay/neuter certificate).

What are the things you need to consider before having a pet?
There are a number of factors that you must consider before adding a pet to your household, especially if you are a first-time pet owner,
  • Level of commitment as pet ownership is a long-term commitment
  • Your ability to afford the cost of taking care of a pet, from food, grooming, veterinary care, and other expenses which can easily reach hundreds of dollars per year
  • Consider your lifestyle if you have the time to take care of a pet, especially if you travel a lot or have long work hours outside of the house.
  • Whether you or your family have allergies to dogs especially the fur
  • Space
  • Restrictions
  • Cleanliness
  • Temperament
  • Choose the right breed for you that will fit your lifestyle and preferences
Are dogs allowed on the subway in Philly?

SEPTA’s pet policy is as follows: “Small animals that are carried in a covered, secured container, that can be stored on the owner’s lap, without danger or disturbance to other customers, will be permitted on vehicles.”

How many dogs are you allowed to own in Pennsylvania?
There is no limit on the number of dogs you can own in Pennsylvania at the state level, but this can change at the city or county level.
