Best Rated Dog Parks in and Around Austin

Top Dog Parks in Austin, TX | BetterVet

Our pets know the routine - they start getting excited as soon they notice us packing up the car. They can't wait to stick their heads out the window and feel the wind in their fur. And, of course, they always look forward to a good romp in the park. Some even make a beeline for the door whenever they see their leash.

At BetterVet, we know that pet parents want the best for their pets, especially when it comes to things like diet and exercise that could have a major impact on quality of life. Spending time outdoors is not only a great way to play and bond with your dog, but a great way for them to get regular exercise and fresh air as well! However, there are still a few things that you will want to watch out for as a pet parent to keep your pup safe. Your dog may pick up foreign foods or objects, leading to a trip to your local veterinarian in Austin

Thankfully, dog parks offer a designated, safe space for our furry friends to run around and play without us having to worry about them. And in Austin, TX we're lucky enough to have some of the best dog parks in the country. From large off-leash parks to smaller on-leash parks, there's something for every pup - and their human companion. Here are some of our favorite Austin dog parks:

1. Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park

As pet parents, we want our furry friends to have the best time when they're frolicking in the great outdoors. That's why Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park is one of our top picks for the best Austin dog parks.

For starters, there are over 200 acres of land to explore with your pup - whether it's taking a stroll on one of the many trails or playing fetch in one of the open fields. And the creek running through the park is perfect for cooling off on a hot day.

But, we can't let the pups have all the fun, can we? Pet parents, too, can enjoy the dirt trails, shade, and beautiful scenery that Walnut Creek has to offer.

This park is large and your pup may require some additional supervision, but he or she will love the open spaces that this park has to offer.

2. Zilker Metropolitan Park

Along 2100 Barton Springs Road, Austin, you'll find Zilker Metropolitan Park - a bustling oasis in the city. This 350-acre park is perfect for a day out with your four-legged friend.

Zilker Park has something for everyone. For instance, the grassy terrain is any pet's dream come true, allowing them to run to their heart's content. The 45-acre off-leash area is perfect for pet parents who want their furry companions to enjoy the freedom of open space.

Your pup will want nothing else after exploring this play area but to take a well-deserved nap. After all the exercise, make sure to keep your pup hydrated. And remember, a rabies vaccination is a must before you head out to this park. If you're scoping out Austin dog parks worth a visit, Zilker is unmissable.

3. Red Bud Isle

Red Bud Isle is situated at 3401 Redbud Trail, Austin, and offers plenty of space for your pup to run leash-free. The 13-acre island is ideal for fishing, hiking, swimming - you name it. Even your furry companion can take a dip.

What more? You can enjoy the short nature trail, the scenic views of the tree-lined shore, or lie down under the shady trees as your furry companion does their thing.

This volunteer-maintained park is the perfect example of 'size doesn't always matter.' You can have as much fun with your pup here as you would at one of the larger dog parks.

4. Emma Long Metropolitan Park

This municipal park lies on the shores of Lake Austin. And although your pup will have to stay on a leash, you can still find plenty to do with them. Even so, it's on our list of the best dog parks in the area for a reason.

Essentially, the beauty of Emma Long Metropolitan Park lies in its location - away from all the city noise, making it the perfect place to relax and take in the scenery with your furry friend. The lake views are simply breathtaking, and there are plenty of shady spots to escape the heat.

If you're feeling active, try out the hike and bike trail. Or, if you prefer to laze about under the sun, the sand beach is open to the public.

Owing to the park's popularity, finding parking, especially on weekends, can be quite challenging. Plus, you'll need to reserve a spot if you want to use the group picnic areas.

5. Onion Creek District Park

Bring the whole family over to the Onion Creek District Park for a day of fun and relaxation. This 179-acre park is located at Onion Creek Drive, Austin, and has plenty for every family member - especially the furry ones.

You can start by attempting the shady hiking trails. Then, head over to the scenic creek for some splashing and wading. After that, take the kids to the playgrounds (or perhaps start here). Your four-legged family member gets to play, run, and socialize off-leash in the designated area, except around the kids' playgrounds.

What about client service? If the provision of poop bags counts, you'll find plenty of them around the park - at the pet bag stations. However, you'll have to bring your water.

6. West Austin Park

Indeed, big things come in small packages. West Austin Park is one of the tiniest Austin dog parks - located at 1317 W 10th St, Austin. That said, it’s a great place to bring your four-legged friend for some exercise and socialization.

The fenced-in area is perfect for your furry buddy to run off-leash, giving you peace of mind as they explore the park. In addition, the off-leash play area is separated into two sections - one for smaller breeds and puppies and the other for big dogs.

The park offers playscape equipment, tennis courts, and a basketball hoop for your other family members. Plus, the picnic tables make it easy to keep an eye on everyone while you enjoy your lunch. Also, water dispensers and poop bags are provided, allowing your dog to hydrate as you take care of their 'other' business.

Undoubtedly, Austin is home to some of the best dog parks. If you are living in the Austin area - or even just in for a visit with your furry friend - get out and enjoy the fresh air at one of these amazing parks!
