Frequently Asked Questions

Does Texas require a pet license?

The City of Houston Municipal Code requires that anyone who owns, keeps, possesses, or has control of a dog or cat four months of age or older must have his or her pet licensed, vaccinated against rabies every year, and also have a registered microchip. This helps identify and protect pets in case they get lost. Licensing your pet is the law.

How many pets are you allowed to have in Houston?

Houston Animal Control deems it unlawful for any person to simultaneously have or keep more than three dogs over the age of six months if within 150 feet of any residential dwelling other than the dwelling of the owner of such dogs.

How much does it cost to register a pet in Texas?
Pet registration fees vary from city to city. For example, in Dallas, you are required to microchip your pet and not register with your city. However, in Arlington, you need to register your pet annually. Fees are lower if your pet is spayed or neutered.
What pets are not allowed in Houston Texas?
Harris County requires animals that are considered dangerous or wild to be registered with the county. The following animals are considered dangerous:
Apes
Bears
Binturongs
Bobcats
Cheetahs
Chimps
Cougars
Coyotes
Elephants
Hyenas
Jackals
Leopards
Lesser Pandas
Lions
Lynxes
Ocelots
Rhinoceros
Servals
Tigers
Wolves
Can dogs roam free in Texas?

There is no statewide “leash law” in Texas and in general Texas code does allow owners and handlers to let dogs roam without a leash in off-leash areas and dog parks. However, it does depend from city to city. Houston and other cities do have laws that require dog owners to either leash, muzzle, or restrain dogs when in certain areas.
