Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chicago a dog-friendly city?

Chicago is a very dog-friendly city, with tons of dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, parks, and beaches. There is so much for you and your pet to explore in the city. However, some big tourist attractions such as Millenium Park are closed to dogs, even if they are on a leash.

Does Chicago require a pet license?

The City of Chicago requires dogs four months or older to be registered with the city (per Municipal Code 07-12-140). All licensed dogs must show proof of rabies vaccination. Registering your dog with the City of Chicago can help locate your dog in the event that they get lost.

Is there a pet limit in Chicago?

A maximum of four dogs and four cats older than six months may be owned, kept, or harbored in an individual residence. An individual residence refers to single-family dwellings and each individual dwelling unit within multi-unit housing structures.

Does Illinois require a pet license?

The requirements for the licensing and registration of dogs depend on the cities and counties.  In Lake County, Illinois, every dog and cat older than 4 months must be vaccinated against rabies and be registered. McLean County, on the other hand, focuses on rabies protection and requires pets to be registered with the McLean County Animal Control with proof of animal vaccination.

You will need a license if you want to become the operator of a pet shop, cattery, dog dealer, kennel, animal control facility, or animal shelter.

Are dogs allowed on the Chicago Riverwalk?

Dogs are allowed on the Riverwalk and on Lakefront Trail. In fact, the Riverwalk is a popular dog-friendly hike. From the Gateway, you can enter the Riverwalk itself, which takes pedestrians along the river and through Chicago's downtown area. There are plenty of little restaurants that are dog-friendly - Just make sure that your dog is leashed and friendly.
